Khulna University Launches EU-Funded Climate and Urban Studies Module

The three-year initiative connects European policy studies with questions facing Bangladeshi cities.

Khulna University has launched what it describes as Bangladesh’s first Jean Monnet Module under the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme. BSS reported that the opening took place at the university on November 4, bringing a new international collaboration into its teaching and research activities.

The module focuses on EU governance, the Green Deal and climate-resilient urban development. Professor Md Ashik Ur Rahman of the Urban and Rural Planning Discipline developed the initiative and is coordinating its three-year implementation. The launch included representatives from the University Grants Commission and the university administration.

Speakers said the programme would introduce students to European climate and development policies while considering their relevance to Bangladesh. Planned activities include 480 hours of educational work and direct involvement by at least 100 undergraduates. The announcement concerns a defined academic module, rather than the establishment of an entirely new university or degree-awarding institution.

Context: International policy studies can be useful when they help students compare how different places approach shared problems. Applying lessons from another region requires attention to local governance, resources and environmental conditions. A policy that works in one setting cannot simply be assumed to work unchanged in another.

The module’s contribution will become clearer through its teaching, research outputs and student participation. Opportunities to connect coursework with real urban questions could help demonstrate its relevance beyond the launch ceremony. Further information about enrolment and the academic timetable would also help interested students understand how to take part and what the programme adds to their existing university studies and research interests.
