Dhaka Stocks Recover as More Shares Rise Than Fall

The rebound follows four losing sessions, although trading value declines.

Bangladesh’s stock market ended a four-session decline on November 4, with the Dhaka Stock Exchange’s broad index closing higher. BSS reported that DSEX finished at approximately 5,342 points as buying strengthened later in the session.

Market breadth was positive: 280 of the 395 traded issues advanced, while 49 declined and 66 were unchanged. Textile shares accounted for the largest share of turnover, followed by general insurance and pharmaceuticals. The report said all sectors posted positive returns, with paper and ceramics among the stronger performers.

Trading value, however, fell to about Tk5.2 billion from Tk5.6 billion in the preceding session. Chattogram’s exchange also ended higher. The combination of rising prices and lower turnover shows that the day’s improvement did not come with a corresponding expansion in the total value of transactions.

Context: An index summarises price movements across a defined group of securities, while turnover measures trading activity. They answer different questions. A higher index may reflect renewed buying interest, but one session is not enough to determine whether a sustained market recovery has begun.

The reported figures are a description of completed trading, not a forecast of future returns. Subsequent sessions, company disclosures and changes in participation would be needed to assess whether the improvement broadens. For a more complete view, readers can follow market breadth alongside turnover and index levels, rather than relying on a single headline measure. The latest session offered a recovery in prices, with continuing caution still visible in the lower value of transactions.
