Government support is being linked to the suitability of individual sites and institutional participation.
The government is encouraging wider use of rooftop solar panels at homes, institutions and industrial premises as part of its longer-term energy programme. Prime Minister’s Adviser and PMO spokesperson Mahdi Amin outlined the approach at a seminar in Dhaka on November 4, according to BSS.
The discussion formed part of Bangladesh Solar Expo 2026 at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre. Amin said individuals and organisations were being encouraged to consider installations according to their capacity and the feasibility of available sites. State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr MA Muhit also attended the seminar.
Amin said initiatives were under way to expand solar facilities across more than 100,000 educational institutions, covering different levels of education. The stated approach includes identifying suitable rooftops and unused spaces. The announcement describes an intended expansion, rather than confirmation that all the institutions already have operating systems.
Context: Rooftop solar can place generation close to where electricity is used, but the performance of any installation depends on its design and operating conditions. Roof strength, shading, electrical safety, maintenance arrangements and the connection process all affect whether a project produces useful power over time.
The next measure of progress will be the number of functioning installations and the electricity they actually generate. Schools, hospitals and other institutions would also need clear responsibilities for maintenance and fault reporting. Public reporting on commissioned capacity and output could help distinguish completed projects from proposed ones, while giving consumers a clearer picture of how the wider expansion is developing across the country.
