Mongla Port Expansion Set for Foundation Ceremony on November 5

The project includes two container jetties and supporting cargo-handling facilities.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for a major expansion of Mongla Port on November 5, according to a BSS report published the previous day. The project is intended to increase capacity at Bangladesh’s second-largest seaport and strengthen trade connections in the southwest.
The expansion and modernisation programme has an estimated cost of Tk4,068.23 crore. Mongla Port Authority is implementing it under the Ministry of Shipping, with China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation appointed as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor. Financing involves the governments of Bangladesh and China.
Planned infrastructure includes container jetties 10 and 11, with a combined quay length of 368 metres, together with cargo-handling equipment and associated facilities. The report described potential benefits for maritime trade, regional industry and employment. Those are anticipated outcomes of the investment, rather than results already achieved at the construction stage.
Context: Additional berth space can help a port accommodate cargo, but overall performance also depends on navigation access, customs procedures, equipment reliability and onward transport. A new jetty is most effective when these services work together and cargo can move efficiently between ships, storage areas and inland destinations.
The foundation ceremony marks the start of a public project milestone, not the opening of completed facilities. Businesses following the expansion will need construction schedules, commissioning dates and confirmed operating arrangements to judge its commercial effect. Regular updates on costs and progress would also help explain how the investment is developing and when users can realistically expect additional services to become available.
